Yorkshire is a large county located towards the north of the United Kingdom in Europe. It is a very popular place to visit for tourists from both abroad and the UK. The region is famous for its beautiful moorlands especially in the north of the county but which 5 attractions are must see places to visit in Yorkshire? This article discusses the 5 best attractions in Yorkshire and gives some background on each.

Whilst many visitors come to Yorkshire for the wild moorlands some of the best attractions are located elsewhere in the cities or on the coast of this beautiful region of the United Kingdom. One of Yorkshire's best attractions is the city of York itself. This mid sized city is a tourist haven attracting visitors to it for numerous attractions such as its museums and beautiful scenery. York is also home to York Minster, the largest cathedral in the north of England and visible for miles from outside the city. Whilst in York you can also walk around the streets and enjoy the wide variety of shopping facilities available in mainly pedestrianised areas.

Another great Yorkshire attraction is Whitby which is located on the coast about an hour drive from York. Whitby is a fishing town that nestles on either side of the River Esk and it's most popular attraction is Whitby Abbey. The abbey fell in ruin hundreds of years ago but the structure remains largely intact and can be visited and walked around today.

A few miles just to the south of Whitby is Robin Hood's Bay. This idyllic village nestles on a steeply sloping hillside which leads down to a large sandy bay. The bay was once used by smugglers as it provided perfect shelter to protect their boats whilst they brought ashore their goods. It's worth a visit to explore the village and history and learn about its history.

Further south along the coast is the town of Scarborough which is the perfect seaside town with two beaches on either side of a prominent headland. Scarborough Castle dominates the town's skyline and can be easily explored offering excellent insights into its history and the history of the area. Scarborough has a large number of hotels and other types of accommodation nearby and there's plenty of local attractions and things to do either for a short stay or longer visit.

Finally take a trip inland to Knaresborough which is 40 minutes or so to the north of York. This beautiful town is home to Mother Shipton's Cave which supposedly grants wishes to those who visit. The cave is a popular attraction within the town but you can also visit the small keep and explore the beautiful countryside on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors.
